Massive Nationwide India Protests Against Caste-Based Discrimination

Hundreds Arrested as Police Clash with Protestors

What Happened?

On August 21, 2024, India witnessed a massive nationwide "Bharat Bandh" (National Shutdown) organized by the Reservation Bachao Sangharsh Samiti (RBSS). The protests were sparked by the perceived dilution of caste-based reservations in educational institutions and government jobs.

Why the Protests?

The protestors claimed that recent government policies aimed at granting economic reservations for underprivileged sections of society would undermine the existing caste-based reservation system. They argued that this would further marginalize historically disadvantaged communities.

Widespread Impact

The Bharat Bandh brought major cities across India to a standstill, with protestors blocking roads, railways, and markets. Several states imposed Section 144, prohibiting the assembly of four or more people in public areas. Over 400 protestors were arrested for violating Section 144 and engaging in violence.

Government Response

The Indian government condemned the violence and vandalism during the protests. They maintained that the new economic reservation policy was not intended to replace or diminish existing caste-based reservations.

Continuing Tensions

The Bharat Bandh highlighted the deep-rooted tensions surrounding caste-based reservations in India. While some argue that the system is necessary to address historical discrimination, others believe it perpetuates division and inequality. The government faces the challenge of balancing the interests of different societal groups while addressing the complexities of caste and social justice.
